EDUC 5313 - Week 1 Blog
Part 1: Welcome to my blog! After more than 35
years as a radiographer in the medical imaging profession and 8 years as an
educator in the field, I decided to pursue my master's degree in education to
better support my students. Learning new technology does not come naturally to
me, but I am excited to explore this platform and connect with others who are
passionate about education and lifelong learning. Thanks for joining me on this
journey.
Part 2: This week I chose to review the ISTE
Empowered Learner indicator 1a, which focuses on students learning to set
goals, develop strategies utilizing technology to achieve those goals, and
reflect on the learning process to improve learning outcomes. Oklahoma high
school students, grades 9-12, can address information literacy standard
5.12.1 by working collaboratively to include diverse perspectives in
problem-solving and by actively engaging in asking and answering questions.
They can also meet standard 5.12.4 by seeking and providing constructive
feedback and revising their work, as necessary.
Though my teaching experience
is in higher education, I found that the information literacy standards for
high school students align closely with those for college students when it
comes to fostering empowered learning. Information literacy includes the
ability to take information presented in the classroom, evaluate its relevance,
and effectively apply it in practical context, such as the laboratory and
clinical setting. This skill is essential in medical imaging education, as it
helps learners bridge the gap between theory and practice. In fact, patients'
lives depend on it.
Some digital tools that can
support sharing and collaboration include Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Tools like
Kahoot can gamify learning while assessing information literacy and critical
thinking, with the added benefit of providing immediate feedback.
Part 3: Reflecting on Kolb's Triple E Framework,
each of the digital tools mentioned can engage, enhance, and extend learning.
Microsoft Teams and Zoom offer platforms for real-time communication enabling
students to collaborate and exchange ideas. These tools also extend learning
beyond the classroom by supporting communication outside of class hours. Kahoot
engages students by turning learning into a game, making it more enjoyable. It
also enhances learning through instant feedback, which reinforces concepts and
improves understanding. But as pointed out by Kolb (2020), "the type of
tool selected is not nearly as significant as the instructional strategies a
teacher creates" (p. 2).

Wow! It's inspiring to hear about your extensive experience as both a radiographer and educator. Your openness to explore and connect is fantastic! I really like how you've connected ISTE Empowered learner indicator 1a with your experience in medical imaging education. Setting goals, developing strategies, and reflecting on the learning process are essential skills for students at any level. I also appreciate how you've drawn the parallel between high school and college students in terms of information literacy. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lashae! It looks like we will get to work together this next week on our podcast assignment. I look forward to meeting you and collaborating.
